Thailand Cannabis Laws 2026: Everything Travelers Need to Know
Thailand's cannabis landscape keeps evolving. Here's the current legal status, what you can buy, where to go, and the rules every visitor must follow.
Thailand made global headlines in 2022 when it became the first country in Southeast Asia to decriminalize cannabis. Since then, the regulatory landscape has evolved through multiple iterations — and understanding the current rules is essential for any traveler.
Traditional Thai medicine has used cannabis for centuries. Hemp was historically woven into Thai textiles, and cannabis was a common ingredient in traditional remedies before prohibition.
The Current Legal Framework
As of 2026, cannabis with less than 0.2% THC (hemp) remains fully legal. Higher-THC cannabis is regulated through a licensing system. Licensed dispensaries operate legally across the country, with the heaviest concentration in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Pattaya.
You must be 20 years or older (not 18) to purchase cannabis in Thailand. This differs from many Western countries and is strictly enforced. Always carry your passport.
Where to Find Licensed Dispensaries
Thailand's dispensary scene is concentrated in five main areas, each with its own character and product focus.
Dos and Don'ts for Visitors
- DO carry your passport — ID is required at every purchase
- DO ask staff about potency, especially if you're new to Thai strains
- DON'T consume in temples, government buildings, or near schools
- DON'T drive under the influence — DUI laws apply
- DON'T attempt to take any cannabis products out of Thailand
- DON'T buy from unlicensed street vendors
